Saturday Was Important - Kroffts

Let us kick off this oasis of TV chatter with a rousing discussion of the best Sid and Marty Krofft shows.  Kids today have no idea how important Saturday mornings used to be...and how incredibly important that first Saturday morning each Fall was....the one that started the new cartoon season.

Mental picture.....kid gets up at 7:00 am, pulls out the box of Captain Crunch, sets up a TV tray in the living room, and proceeds to rip the roof of his mouth with the good Cap'n....while watching some of the best TV of the 70's.  That was my pathetic but wonderful life for many years.

Here are my choices of the top 5, in order of preference, 1 being my favorite......

  1. Land of the Lost:  One word says it all.....Sleestak.  Check out these beauties...  LOTL Stuff
  2. Sigmund the Sea Monster: Johnnie Whitaker's second best work.
  3. Lidsville: I have a soft spot in my heart for any show with Charles Nelson Reilly (see upcoming discussion of best game shows)
  4. H. R. Pufnstuf: Great theme song.  Love WichiePoo and the bizarre Orson Vulture and Seymour Spider.
  5. The Bugaloos: In a world of bizarre entertainment, this stands out as one of the best.  Billy Barty and Martha "my dentures are loose and I can't get up" Raye add "credibility" to this odd tale of singing insects.

You can keep your Power Rangers, your Drake and Josh and your Saved By The Bell.  The shows above are the groundbreakers....the visionists.....the true risk takers.  They gave the Bay City Rollers a chance to shine.  They helped other shows get a foothold.  Shows like Shazam and Isis were given a chance because of these shows.

Let's all take some time out of our busy schedules next week and think about something like....

H.R. Pufnstuf
Who's your friend when things get rough
H.R. Pufnstuf
Can't do a little, 'cause you can't do enough

I promise you will feel a lot better.
