    Back From Geekdom

Just got home from a week at an IT techie conference.  While I could drone on for hours about the virtues of the next version of Microsoft Office, I have decided to concentrate tonight's little note on three little items related to my trip:

    Who Hasn't Seen Porky's?
As I sat at my boarding gate at O'Hare, I was struggling to maintain a positive sense of humor.  A week away from home, and some pretty rude actions by people around me was bringing me down.  Then, as if one of the great comedians of yesteryear decided to send down a laugh for me, I hear the following page over the airport communication system:  "United Airlines is looking for passenger Hunt.  Would Mike Hunt please come to the ticket counter?  We really need Mike Hunt to come forward."  I, along with a group of high school kids laughed hard for a minute or two.  3 Hour Cruise, this one should sound verrry familiar.  One of our all-time favorite presentations at work.

    I Am One Boring Person
Many might ask, what did you do in your free time while on the trip.  I wish I could say I drove to cool sites, and took lots of awesome pictures.  Of course, all I did was get something cheap to eat, then went back to my room and watched free HBO.  Due to budget constraints, along with concerns of content with the kids, we don't have a movie channel at home.  Since I love movies, I usually get caught up on movies when I travel.  Here are my top watches for the week(ratings 5= GREAT, 1=Junk):
      1. Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire - This was the movie on the flight.  I liked it, but can see why if got a PG-13 rating(rating: 4).
      2. Alien Vs Predator - Not as goofy as I thought it would be.  Neat special effects.  (Rating: 2.75)
      3. White Noise - Micheal Keaton trying to communicate with his recently deceased wife.  Just didn't get into it (Rating: 2)
      4. Titanic - Still don't get it.  OK movie.  Rather watch a real documentary on it. (rating: 2)
      5. Shrek 2 - Still funny.  At times, almost too much satire.  Still laugh at the Starbucks gag.  Also like Puss In Boots.  (Rating: 4)
      6. The Original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - This one still amazes me.  I think it was on USA or some other cable channel.  Some of the oddest stuff in a kids movie.  Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka (Rating: 4.5)

Did I Just See What I Just See?

I have never taken to stereotypes.  However, my chosen profession has a few that I think have some validity.  Many who pursue a career in IT have unpolished social skills.  They definitely march to a different drummer.  The following is a good example (if you have read any of my other posts, you KNOW this has to have something to do with the bathroom).....

There are two critical factors that trigger this event:
      • With a male to female ratio of approx 90 to 1, availability of potty space is reversed to what it typically is in public places.  Each lady pretty much has her own toilet, while men are forced to stand in long, long lines.
      • Yesterday, the "good" box lunches ran out, and several people were forced to eat either tuna salad or the vegetarian lunch.
With these two facts in mind……..
Today, as the last session before lunch is wrapping up, I get up and head to the….head.  As I walk up on the line, from inside the bathroom I hear, "well, I ain't gonna eat tuna today!".  Then the line moves up so I get inside, and what do I see but two guys in the front of the line with their box lunches in hand, one has already started eating his…..while in the bathroom waiting to go potty.  I hear another person say, "that's a great idea!".   The final fact that puts this way over the top was when one of the front guys gets his turn at the urinal….and he places the sandwich in his mouth and takes care of business.

    I really like business trips.

Cheryl, the new version has some big changes in the user interface.  It will be cool.

Dr Cara, I am willing to give White Noise another viewing.  Just a lot of anxiety waiting for Keaton to say, "I'm Batman"

Kim, glad you liked the story....more to come :)

Chris, the mental image of your silhouette against that bright screen shaking uncontrollably as MH is mentioned over and over still makes me laugh hard.

Kweei, thanks for the comments.  You were absolutely correct on the link.  Thanks.  Still not sure about the movie......

Hey two things - I was looking at your 'I paid to see this??' list and the link to 1941 isn't right and I don't think you give that movie enough credit.  I has some very good part like when Sgt. Frank Tree (Dan Aykroyd) is pretending to be a bug with the two oranges and painty hose.  Come on man.  That was great. Oh and the part with Capt. Loomis Birkhead (Tim Matheson) tries to ... you know what with Donna Stratton (Nancy Allen) in the plane.  That was great.  I would go into more detail but your kids might read this someday.

Wish I could have been on this trip.  It's always fun to people watch with you.  Unfortunately you tend to draw them too close.

Love the sandwich in the bathroom story.  I was ready for the worst - setting the food on the urinal...

BTW:  I asked Karen to page Mike H. at the airport...just for you!

hahahah!! The lunch in the bathroom line story is too much!!

I'm glad to see you had a fairly decent trip. However, I must disagree with you on your ratiing of "White Noise". As any woman can tell you, the whole premise is "men, do what your wives tell you!" ;) (actually, I really liked it - but I kinda like creepy psychological movies... but not the bloody ones)
